Common Signs of ADHD in Adults

Adults with ADHD often experience:

- Difficulty staying focused on tasks or conversations

- Frequent forgetfulness — missed deadlines, lost items

- Impulsive decisions or interrupting others

- Restlessness or inability to sit still

- Disorganised work and poor time management

- Mood swings and low frustration tolerance

Unlike childhood ADHD, adults often show more inattention than hyperactivity.

Understanding Your ASRS Result: Scoring and Interpretation

The ASRS v1.1 screener uses a pattern-based result rather than a single total score. The first six questions form Part A, and your result is based on how many Part A questions are marked positive — that is, how many responses fall within the scoring range for that item.

Positive screen — 4 or more Part A questions positive

Your responses are consistent with adult ADHD symptom patterns. This does not confirm a diagnosis, but it suggests a comprehensive psychiatric assessment would be worthwhile.

Professional evaluation is recommended. ADHD in adults is treatable, and early assessment generally improves outcomes.

Negative screen — fewer than 4 Part A questions positive

What the ASRS Measures

The ASRS evaluates the two core symptom dimensions of adult ADHD across six screening questions, with an optional twelve-item extended scale.

Inattention — difficulty sustaining focus, following through on tasks, or organising activities.

Hyperactivity and impulsivity — restlessness, difficulty waiting, talking excessively, or acting without thinking.

Executive function — problems with planning, prioritising, time management, and working memory. Common in adults, and often the most disruptive to work and study.

Emotional regulation — low frustration tolerance, mood fluctuations, and sensitivity to criticism. Frequently overlooked, but widely reported by adults with ADHD.

Important Notes on This Screening

A screening score cannot confirm or rule out ADHD. An ADHD diagnosis requires a comprehensive evaluation including a clinical interview, developmental history, and ruling out other conditions.

Symptoms that resemble ADHD can also arise from anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, thyroid conditions, substance use, or significant life stress. This is one of the main reasons a professional assessment matters — accurate diagnosis determines appropriate management.
